Primitive magmas and source characteristics of the Hawaiian plume: petrology and geochemistry of shield picrites
A suite of tholeiitic picrites from eight of the younger (<2 Ma) Hawaiian shield volcanoes provides new information about the compositions of primitive magmas and source components in the Hawaiian plume. Olivine and bulk rock compositions show that parental melts at Hawaiian volcanoes have at least 13–17% MgO and 3⁄410% Al2O3. The picrites have bulk compositions ranging from 14 to 30% MgO, and ...
متن کاملBiological marker geochemistry of selected oils and possible source rocks from central Alborz Basin
Surface oil seeps from Alasht, Lapur and Jenesem share many compositional affinities including distributions and concentrations ofnormal alkanes, terpanes and steranes. These oils also show many similarities with that of Jurassic sediments (Shemshak Group, KlarizFormation) systematically sampled from the Galandrud Coal Mine. Recent geochemical studies in this area indicated that theShemshak Gro...
متن کاملGeochemistry of the Paleocene Sediments from SW Ahar: Implications for Provenance, Tectonics and Source Rock Weathering
The mineralogy and geochemistry of Paleocene shales and interbedded siltstones in the southwestern of Ahar town (NW Iran) were studied by optical microscopy, XRD, SEM, XRF, and ICP-MS techniques. The mineralogical composition, mainly characterized by calcite, quartz, feldspar, dolomite, muscovite, magnesiohornblende, chlorite, illite, montmorionite, palygorskite, and koninckite, suggests relati...
متن کاملA New and Primitive Barnacle (Cirripedia: Balanomorpha) from the North Fiji Basin Abyssal Hydrothermal Field, and Its Evolutionary Implications
A new sessile barnacle, Eochione/asmus ohtai, n. gen ., n. sp ., has been discovered associated with an abyssal hydrothermal vent at 1990 m depth in the North Fiji Basin, Southwest Pacific. The genus is distinguished from its closest and bathyal relative, Chione/asmus , in having distinct, multiple whorls of basal imbricating plates. These and other characters render it the most primitive livin...
